Applying to the Collaborative Art Initiative

The CAI is a highly interactive, three-phase educational and cultural exchange program of the University of the Middle East Project (UME), taking place during 2008 and 2009 in the US, Jordan and Morocco. UME is currently recruiting teachers, youth group leaders, community program directors, and social workers for the first phase of the CAI from July 11-17, 2008, based in Bristol, RI, on the campus of Roger Williams University. Participants of the first phase will have priority to travel to Jordan and/or Morocco during the later phases.

These documents are for American teachers only. In order to complete this application you must be an educator currently working in the United States. Dates for American teachers are July 11-17, 2008. Please note the deadline has been extended to 15 May 2008.

Instructions for Teachers in the Middle East and North Africa

Applicants from countries in the Middle East or North Africa (MENA) must be alumni of the Teacher Education Institute.

The application process for MENA teachers is now closed. If you applied and have not yet received notification of your decision, please contact UME staff.

Application criteria

To apply to the Teacher Education Institute, you must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a citizen and resident of a Middle Eastern or North African community
  • Be proficient in written English – all applications must be written in English
  • Be proficient in spoken English – all interviews will be conducted in English
  • Be a certified secondary school teacher of students 14-19 years of age, with at least two years of teaching experience
Participation in the Teacher Education Institute also requires that all participants be willing to commit to a six-month follow-on program which aims to:
  • Support TEI alumni in the implementation of teaching methodologies learned during the program
  • Assist alumni with the provision of seminars to train other teachers at the alumni's schools in methodologies learned at TEI
  • Prepare alumni for participation in national conferences on education-related topics
